Drugs are being used since ages. Sometimes people get addicted to drugs and become a prey of drug abuse. Drug abuse is not an individual’s problem. It is a social issue. Some of the drugs that are an abuse now were prescribed by the doctors in the past. But, their easy availability and the ill use made them an abuse. Some of the drugs that are widely used include hydrocodone, cocaine, oxycodone, marijuana, heroin, and opium. These are just a few from the long list of drugs. Here we closely look at some of them one by one.

Carl Mannich and Helene Lowenheim were the first to produce hydrocodone in Germany in 1920. The marketing for hydrocodone started in February in 1924. It was promoted by Knoll as Dicodid and this name got registered in the United States. It contained pure hydrocodone and was available in 5mg and 10mg tablets. It was more popular in North America. Germany remained the number two consumer till its manufacturing was stopped. It was classified as a Class A drug after the Misuse of Drugs Act of 1971 was passed in the United Kingdom.

The history of cocaine is very old. The Incas used to chew coca leaves to meet the demands of their living. The German chemist Albert Niemann extracted cocaine from coca leaves in 1859. Native Peruvians also used coca leaves but it was limited to their religious ceremonies only. When Spanish soldiers attacked Peru in 1532, they used it as a mean to control Indian laborers. Sigmund Freud, who was an Austrian psychoanalyst not only used it himself but also prescribed it for general use. When John Pemberton included coca leaves in the manufacturing of Coca-Cola in 1886, it attracted millions of people. Later, in 1903, Coca-Cola Company was forced to remove cocaine from their product.

Marijuana has been used since ancient times. Chinese medical references are the evidence of its use. Even in America, it is being consumed since a long ago. Marijuana was an important mean of revenue for the U.S before the Civil War. From 1850 to 1937, it was used as a medicinal drug and was even accessible from the general store. It was relatively cheaper than alcohol so it was being used by the lower class as well. This gave rise to aggressiveness and crime too. Thus, it ended up in the banning of marijuana in 1937.

The smoking of opium was introduced in the 1850s and 1860s in the U.S by the Chinese laborers and became prevalent during the American Civil War. The heroine was produced in 1895 to handle the morphine addiction. This was the time when heroin addiction began to establish. During the Vietnam War, a large number of the U.S soldiers were reported to become addictive to heroin. Smoking and snorting of heroin were also practiced during the 1980s and 1990s. This gave rise to the consumption of heroine.

 It was created for the first time in 1938 in Switzerland. Psychiatrists used this drug a lot during the 1940s and 1960s. However, its illegal production started in 1966 and even the black market was developed. In the 1970s and 1980s, the decrease was noticed in the use but came back in 1990s
